Social Security Now Requires Identity Verification

To meet the new requirements to verify your identity, sign up for an online ‘My Social Security’ account: https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/

If you can’t go to an office in person, you are going to need an online account if you are asked to verify your identity. The full process to get a 'My Social Security' account can take a few weeks. In addition to the loops you have to jump through online, they also mail you paperwork that you must respond to. It's best to get the account dialed in as soon as you can. You may want to get started today. We have more information for you below. https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/

"Social Security Protocols Are Changing March 31!" (Update: Recent reports indicate that the start date is being paused for two weeks, and that the requirements will only apply to Social Security Retirement. However, this administration keeps changing things. It is probably a good idea to get your 'My Social Security' account dialed in no matter what kind of Social Security you depend on, as soon as possible.)

“ . . . people who claim benefits can no longer verify their identity with the SSA over the phone. Individuals looking to apply for benefits or change their payment information must do so either online or in person.” *

Sign up for an online 'My Social Security' account here: https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/

We just went through the sign in process, and it isn’t fast. Be prepared to give them your exact name as it appears on your Social Security Card, and to receive a code via email, text message, and voice over the phone. (There are some other options as well. They require multiple authentication methods). Then they will be mailing some paperwork that must be responded to, to verify your mailing address. They explained that it could take several weeks to receive the paperwork.

If you need help, ask a friend, neighbor, or family member. If you know someone who might need help, please give them a call and offer to stop by and help. If they don't have a computer maybe you can bring a laptop along, use your smart phone, or maybe sign up to use a computer at the local library. (If they do need help, they are going to need help every time they need to contact Social Security, so please make a record of the email address(es) and passwords, etc. so other folks can help them if needed.)

Action ~ Social Security Class Action Lawsuit ??!!??

Save Social Security! Take Action -- Ask your Members of Congress, State Governor, and State Attorney General to get a Social Security Class Action Lawsuit dialed in. Scroll down for sample letters and for help finding contact info.

1. Contact your Members of Congress and ask them to have their staff research law firms, non-profits, and other organizations that can take on a Class Action Lawsuit on behalf of American Citizens.

If you don’t know who your Members of Congress are or how to contact them go to https://www.congress.gov and look for the heading that says ‘Contact Your Member.”

Using the contact form on your Congress Members’ web sites is better than making a phone call. However, once you have sent the email, you can follow up every few days with a phone call to see if they have any information for you. The squeaky wheel gets the grease!

Sample letter to Members of Congress:

Subject: Social Security Class Action Lawsuit

Dear _____ Please have your staff research law firms, non-profits, and other organizations that can take on a Class Action Lawsuit on behalf of American Citizens that will be affected by cuts to Social Security staff, closures of Social Security offices, and disruptions to Social Security payments. Please let me know when information is available on how to join the suit. (It would be great to add a short paragraph detailing when you started paying into Social Security, how many years you paid in, and the effects it would have on you if your Social Security is disrupted.)

Be sure to click the box requesting a reply, if any, before you click send.
